I finished watching Grey Gardens last night. I'm a little disturbed by Big and Little Edie. Big Edie was Jackie O's aunt and Little Edie her first cousin. The Edies lived in squalor, filth and (I'm sure) smell in a decrepit mansion in the Hamptons. The documentary is 90 minutes of the Edies singing, dancing, talking, sun-bathing, etc even with their eccentricities and sadness-I couldn't help but be amused and charmed by the main characters. I see why the film is a cult classic, and a bit of a twisted cultural icon. Some other great quotes from the film:
Edith 'Little Edie' Bouvier Beale: But you see in dealing with me, the relatives didn't know that they were dealing with a staunch character and I tell you if there's anything worse than dealing with a staunch woman... S-T-A-U-N-C-H. There's nothing worse, I'm telling you. They don't weaken, no matter what.
Edith 'Big Edie' Bouvier Beale: Oh, look. That cat's going to the bathroom right behind my portrait.
Edith 'Little Edie' Bouvier Beale: Ughh, how awful.
Edith 'Big Edie' Bouvier Beale: No, I'm glad. I'm glad somebody's doing something what they want to do!
Edith 'Little Edie' Bouvier Beale: This is the best thing to wear for today, you understand. Because I don't like women in skirts and the best thing is to wear pantyhose or some pants under a short skirt, I think. Then you have the pants under the skirt and then you can pull the stockings up over the pants underneath the skirt. And you can always take off the skirt and use it as a cape. So I think this is the best costume for today.Edith 'Big Edie' Bouvier Beale: [offering food to David and Al Maysles] Will you eat some liver pate, you kiddies?
Edith 'Little Edie' Bouvier Beale: It's not awfully good.
Edith 'Big Edie' Bouvier Beale: If you put lemon with it, it's all right.
Edith 'Big Edie' Bouvier Beale: I may die with this diet!
Edith 'Little Edie' Bouvier Beale: "The Libra husband is reasonable. He is a born judge, and no other zodiacal type can order his life with so much wisdom." God! That's all I need: order! That's all I need: an ordered life. You know, a manager. But he's *got* to be a Libran.

You finally watched it! Isn't it the oddest thing you've ever seen? I immediately rewatched after watching it for the first time. It's one of those that you ALWAYS see something new when you watch. Your quotes are the classics, esp. STAUNCH CHARACTER and best costume for the day!
Now the question becomes, when I go to New York do we see Grey Gardens: The Musical or The Drowsy Chaperone?
I guess that Grey Gardens: The Musical could also be Grey Gardens: The Drowsy Chaperone.
I guess they just released another movie which is the Beales of Grey Gardens...you know i can't get enough.
