U-boats decimating the shipping lanes from the Gulf of Mexico to New England?

My grandmother once recounted how she'd sit on the beaches of the Florida panhandle and watch German U-boats try and sink shipping vessels in the Gulf of Mexico. I guess it's true. ;)
Now that is interesting!! I haven't read this book.
Jesse-Yeah, there's records of that happening. And of the Uboats regularly getting close to shore at that point. There's several accounts of people from shore seeing the wreckage and maybe one or two sinkings as they happen, but that didn't usually happen.
