I finally got around to seeing Indy 4 this weekend. After seeing it, I have a lot of mixed feelings. On the one hand, watching Indy on the big screen, always a delight. Even though Harrison Ford hasn't aged that well, after a while you don't notice that. Even with a mediocre script, Ford shone as Indy. Ultimately though, the script left me lukewarm after the end of the movie.
I was really looking forward to Karen Allen (the best of the Indy Girls, IMO) reprising her role as Marion Ravenwood and Cate Blanchett as the villain. Neither were given a whole lot to work with. Shia La Beouf, well although I think he's talented, I really wasn't impressed.
Then there's the script. The first 20 minutes or so were great. Loved the pace, the dialogue, the action--it was all there. Then the plot started dragging the movie down, and by the time they were in the amazon (the monkey scene--what the hell), even though there was almost non-stop action, I was more or less bored. The last 20 minutes felt really patched together.
Personally, I really liked the archaelogical myths of the Indy films. I found the scenes where the characters were explaining the history and myths of the ark of the Covenantand the Holy Grail very interesting. As someone interested in Pre-Columbian culture, I found myself going wth when Indy said he'd translate the language first into Mayan (that's MEXICO) first. What the hell? And the best they could come up for the plot was aliens? (yawn).
Does the movie compare to the other three? The movie still pales in comparison to the the weakest of the three, "Temple of Doom." Doesn't even compare to Raiders of the Lost Ark, one of my favorite movies of all time. Doesn't even compare to Last Crusade either.

I equate the monkey scene to the mine cart scene in "Temple of Doom". Kinda pointless. I always wondered...what were those Indian kids thinking when they were building that thing?
Yes, Indy 4 was very, very weak, even though I loved Cate and Karen...they were great.
I've always had the hots for Karen! Still do! haha. I haven't had the chance to go see this yet either and sounds like I might as well wait for it on Netflix.
Brent-that's a good comparison.
Steve-That's cool. She's great.
Confession: As a little girl, I wanted to be Marian Ravenwood, not Princess Leia.
actually sherpa, you are full of beans...i did a movie review on putz and gave it 27 stars because i believe it all, even the alien part with the elongated head, i spent years on the nevada test site and i have seen those cities out there that were buried in radioactive dust, that is true, i saw a 12,000 dollar car buried because of contamination, also the giant designs from the air are true..also the warehouse with all the area 51 things saved from the roswell incident, also the picture of oxford in the 50's is all realistic, and the mayan culture, the brain surgery, the highly advanced culture pre book of mormon times...full of beans you are....read my review go to my side bar and punch up on putz...tje movie review of the chrystal heads..so there
oh thee title on the side bar says a DOCUMENTARY ETC ET C ECT
Putz- Indy 4 is not an alien documentary.
Putz- I think I saw you on that Alien Documentary thing a few years ago, didn't I?!?! Actually, I don't deny anything you are saying and even yes, know at least some of those things are true, but there is a difference between things existing and drawing conclusions that draw them all together. That's where the "movie" takes over!
oh posh on you guys...you have no imagination at all
Putz-I think you are the first person ever to tell me that.
I thought everything about it totally blew. Extreme disappointment.
