This is Edward?

Okay, I've already established I'm not a Twilight fan, but I couldn't help but share this picture of the leading characters. I can't imagine how even a goth kid would find this "Edward" sexy. I uh, can't imagine how anyone would find him attractive. The thought that some crazies are comparing these books to porn now really makes me shudder.

did you know in all my blogging i ran across a twilight reader, who thought edward was so wonderful, good, and thrustworthy, loyal, helpful knid that when he marries her they will be able to get sealed in the temple

Well, it's definitely going to be an eternal marriage, since he can't die and all... as for comparing the books to porn, my usual knee-jerk reaction would be to agree that they're crazies, but men get so much flack (usually deserved, I guess) as a whole for porn that it's nice that women are reading some "porn" now too, lol.
So does that mean when I'm reading Twilight it's "gay porn" if I get caught under Edwards charm? Uh oh.

That cover, like EVERYTHING else remotely related to the series has been mourned over, criticized, denounced, and worshipped by fans... fwiw, he doesn't look that white in the actual pictures from the movie that I've seen... I think they were trying to glam it up.

Thrustworthy? That's too good to be a typo.

Anyway, my little sis reads the books and she's so incredibly turned off by this guy that's supposed to be so incredibly attractive. You'd think that, if that was part of the storyline, they really would have tried harder in the casting department. Hey, that's all I'm sayin'.

hah I didn't notice that typo... if this book is the cause of Freudian slips like that, it is definitely pornographic!

I'm not crazy- I swear. And I'm not comparing the books to porn in content. But if you read how some women are responding to the books, it has the same effect as porn to them. If you think I'm way off, look at the discussions on the twilightmoms forum. It's insane.

Yuck! gross! He is uglier than I pictured and Bell looks nothing like a common looking high schooler the book portrays her as. I enjoyed the first book a bit, but the second and third not only bored me to tears, but the unrealistic storyline got old. Now on comparing this book to porn. Ummm... have they seen real porn. I don't think watching a woman sleep is anything close to it.

Okay, I give up- sounds like you're not interested in what I actually said.

Dan-I read what you actually said. I understood what you actually said, but I disagree. That being said, after riding in a car with you 5-6 years ago for 6 hours, I realized we disagree about everything, but that's ok and a digression.

I think it was a huge generalization...There's always going to be people who take a story too far whether it be men fantasizing about Princess Leia, those Harry Potter bands, Star Trekkies etc. I'm don't see much of a difference to them and your zealous condemnations of a few crazed women.

putz-that's sweet.

Adam-women have been reading porn since women could read. ;)
The reason the twilight series were called porn (by someone who never read the books) was because the unrealistic relationships between the protagonists and women believe this is reality. Well, um there's many, many stories out there-called fantasy, and the vast majority of women and even teenage girls can distinguish between the two.

Yeah, I've heard about the fan flack over the cover. The cover is definitely goth glam.

Dainon-Like your little sister, I was really turned off by Edward too. Jacob was okay.

Dan-you aren't crazy, I just like giving you a hard time. I understood that you weren't comparing the two in content-but I still think you were over-reacting. I actually agreed with the NY Times editorial for the most part.

Laura-I hear ya, I struggled through the last two books, and hated them. The third one? pure drivel. So much so, that Meyer is my least favorite living writer. Belle bugged, Edward was totally unrealistic, but Jacob was okay.

He's comparing porn to these novels by effect.

Dan-patience!! I was traveling back from New Mexico. ;)

I was thinking about reading them......but I never got around to it, so maybe I wont even try. But hey, they get people to read that don't really like reading anything else, so that's a plus right?

What's funny is I know more women who don't like Edward than do. Or did the author of that conveniently miss those forums?
I love the books! I'd compare the obsession more to fantasy football than porn, though....

THANK YOU. Oh my heavens, I thought I was the only one who found Edward's description to be abhorrent. I blame my beloved Nerdspouse for making me, YES, MAKING ME read Twilight. It was OK. Then once again I found myself at the BYU bookstore with said Nerdspouse purchasing the second one... I just don't think I can go on with the series, but everyone is going crazy for it! (NS, if you read this, I hope you don't take this as a reflection of my undying --undead?-- love for you.)

On that note, I did see a really funny blog entry about the series that you would prolly like. This woman had to close her comments because she had so many anonymous comments full of vitriol. CRAZY!

nicole- True dat. You gave this "book snob" a check. You should try the first one and see how you like it. I swear I won't think less of you for reading them. I have a friend who loves the books, and although I love teasing her about it (Yes, you Rachel), I have no problem with her loving the books. Its kind of like knowing who Simon Cowell or Britney Spears is, they are rapidly becoming cultural icons. That being said, you've just inspired a seed of a blog post. Stay tuned (possibly for a long time-I'm sometimes not so good on the follow-through of good ideas).

Kristi-Fantasy football? That's a great comparison. That's totally cool you like the books. What did you think of Edward?

Laurie-I love you. That undead love you have for our dear NS made me laugh out loud. Yeah, Edward is abhorrent. I actually read the whole series (so far,I guess). I only finished the last because I was sick lying on our couch.

Thanks for sharing that blog entry!

I have to admit I'm an Edward fan. Maybe it's his Aston Martin.
Yeah, I know, if you stop and think about it, he's really creepy. But if you think much about these books you couldn't get through them (Bella alone would drive you to madness). Sometimes it's just fun to turn off my brain and enjoy. I'm not sure what that says about me :)

Laurie, That "Nerdspouse" girl sounds HAWT!! So sorry she led you astray on the books though. ;-) To be honest I'm not too happy with the way the series ended...or the last couple books really. SM isn't a great writer...or even a good one, but I like the stories she tells. I know you're used to reading "real" books and so this cotton candy for the brain book wasn't your cup of tea. No pressure. I would LOVE to rip on the things I disliked and hated about these books with you!

P.S. I still have undead love for you too. Eternally undead love. Kinda like Michael Jackson but less scary.

The love...it's not in a lezzie way...you know...unless you want it to be.

FTR, Bella did take the "short bus" to school. But whatever.

I so just got busted...

For the record, I wrote that after having read just the 2nd book. I actually loved the third book, and yes, I want to read the fourth now even though people keep posting spoilers in their blasted Facebook statuses! Hello!!

And I was exaggerating about you forcing me to read them... sorta. Ha!

Oh, but do note that le nerdspouse DID introduce me to the books about Georgia, which are absolutely delightful! My husband has even been reading them! And I'd say he's way pickier than me... he's about to finish up Atlas Shrugged, swearing it's the best he's read.

Joy said...

At least she accepted your undying love. I just ordered the first Georgia book. Must read this.

CarrieAnne said...

Georgia ROCKS!! I love "Our Lord Sandra"!! These books make me snort. Did you know there's a movie? But it's not released to the US.

Bugger!

Sherpa, I command thee to read this. Partake. http://bpddjeoomon.livejournal.com/289075.html Anything I say would be incriminating...maybe I will say that I wish they had gotten "actors" to portray these parts instead of hairy, I need a shower, "Edward" and inexpressive, too thin, "Stuttering is emotive" Bella.

Can I get a AMEN!?!
