Spotlight Music
Dream GirlsI had some compensation time I needed to use before it expired, so I took off from work a couple hours yesterday and went to see Dreamgirls at the Uptown theater in DC. The Uptown has the reputation for being the best screen in the area to see a movie. The Uptown is the last movie palace in the area, and the curved screen is a whopping 32 feet x 70 feet. The screen is about the size of an IMAX screen but the curve really makes a difference. Although I had heard a lot about Dreamgirls, it didn't disappoint. The film itself is kind of light fare. A good film, but I don't think it was "snubbed" at the Oscars. However, the acting was rock solid. Even knowing that Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy were the stand outs, I was still knocked out by Hudson's performance, and Murphy nearly stole the show as lecherous James Early. Beyonce Knowles and Jaime Foxx gave solid performances, but were easily shadowed by Hudson and Murphy. Keith Robinson also delivered as Effie's (Jennifer Hudson) brother the song writer. I found myself loving a lot of the music, and overall thought it a movie worth seeing. Oh, and if you find yourself in upper northwest DC, go see a film at the Uptown.

That's the best SNL sketch ever. Jake Gyllenhaal is hi-larious.
Dudess, I just went to The Shins last night. They definitely bring the energy... great performance!
Who knew Jake could sing like that? Oh, and in keeping with the Twilight Zone oddity that we're the same person, I saw Dreamgirls yesterday as well. This is just getting weird.
I like when Eddie delved into James Brown territory with his whole "Jimmie got soul!" bit. What a great moment in cinematic history. Now, the family group hug bit/song had me squirming at laughing at a part that wasn't supposed to be funny. Yikes.
Also, I absolutely dig the song "Sea Legs". I hate the Shins live, more than I do any other band, but they do put out some good tunes.
SJ- Yeah? When I saw them open for the Stripes, they were a little lack-luster, but still fun.
Dainon--funny, I nearly used the line, "Jimmie got Soul," that was one of my favorite parts of the movie. And the fact you saw it on friday too? Weird.
Worst band-performer I've seen live? Hands down Jack Johnson.
I haven't seen Dream Girls but I LOVED the Jennifer Hudson spoof by Jake. He was awesome. Thanks for sharing. It brought a smile to my face.
