(This post is for my mom). About 6 months ago or so, Shannon mentioned that she would like a rag quilt for her (then) unborn little one. I volunteered, even though I've never made one; I'd spent part of my christmas vacation cutting out squares for one my mom was making me so I volunteered. Needless to say, it turned out really well--I was hoping it wouldn't like like someone who hadn't touched a sewing machine for 5 years--and never did all that well in sewing class had made it.
The most time consuming part was cutting out the squares. That was even more time consuming than cutting the seams.
Well, Shannon says she loves it, I surprised myself with it, and yes, I'm making another one (although (I've got squares for a little boy, but a friend is seven months pregnant with a little girl!) and even working on a "real quilt," which I'm hoping to sew the top and take it home when I go to Utah next month. anyway, here's photos of Santiago with his rag quilt.
here's the "back" side of the quilt. I was afraid to wash it, but this is what it looks like after a wash. Its puffed out nicely. This side was bugs, aliens and blue flannel.
Here's Santiago
The other side of the quilt: The "front" side is dinosaurs, jungle and the same blue on the back. This is the tranquilo side--the other is more lively.

that baby's got some wild hair...he's darling.
and the quilt is lots of fun. my mama made a rag quilt for one of my nieces a few years ago. they're really fun. what kind of fabric did you use?
Thanks for the pictures. Quilt looks great, baby is adorable. It looks like you can sew straight lines. Amazing! LV MOM
Its flannel. Each square is three pieces of flannel. front, back and middle.
Mom---some are straighter than others, but yeah--I'm getting better at that. ;)
So that's what Shannon was going on and on about! It's lovely. Good job!
Santiago is adorable. And I think that's such a great idea, to make a "Calm" side to a quilt! If only for the mother's peace and sanity, the baby probably doesn't even notice, LOL, except for the feeling of a soft quilt keeping him warm. Very, very nice. As someone who has NEVER been comfortable with a sewing machine, I'm very impressed.
I had no idea that was the first one you made. Now I'm even more impressed.
I love the fabrics you used, and the flannel is awesome, he loves it. He sleeps with it every night. Sometimes, I try to steal it from him.
I'm no seamstress, but I think that quilt is awesome! Did you just keep sewing until you ran out of squares, or did you have an idea of how big you wanted it to be?
I wish I were more home-skilled at stuff like this. My mother didn't create stuff like this, so I need to find someone that can teach me how. I'd love to make something soft and cuddly for my future babies!
Daisy, how about if I do a step by step tutorial when I do my next one?
Sherpa, I was just catching up on your blog and saw this comment you left after mine. A step-by-step guide would be awesome!
But please don't start it until after September 1st or else I'll be waaaaay behind, mmkay?
I'll probably post all the pictures at once in one post...but it'll be step-by step.
Congrats by the way!
I'm so excited for the two of you!
