Makin' History....

Last year I blogged about Candace Workman, the wrestler from Uintah High School who was probably the first girl to qualify for the Utah State High School Wrestling champs. Well, this year she's in the State finals at 103 pounds. Very impressive.

I come from wrestling stock as well. My dad has coached it for longer than I have been alive.

While I think it is kind of lame that the boys in the article linked cited religious reasons to not wrestle her....I can understand their hesitation. My little bro had to wrestle a girl when he was a freshman and it really was SUPER awkward for him. Certainly nothing sexual, but really awkward.

If nothing else, the girl does have a big psychological advantage.

Maybe I am a disappointment to the Go Girl Power Team, but I don't think that it's really fair.

I don't know. I don't think the girl has a huge psychological advantage. Only if the guy lets it get to him, and well, if the girls wrestling talent is comparable. I know Candace didn't take second in state yesterday just because she's a girl. She's talented, she works hard, and she's been wrestling a lot of those wrestlers she was up against for a while now.

I've seen girls wrestle, especially at the lower level, and it does make the guys nervous, but at the same time I think if a girl wants to do it, there's no reason she can't.

I agree wiht Sherpa. With the male advantage in strength & muscle mass, he should have both the physical & psychological advantage. Kudos to Candace for setting atypical goals & having the mental toughness to work toward her goals! PS she did not win her last match. 2nd in state is OK!

Yeah...I just have really mixed feelings about it.

Regardless of anything else, she must be one tough nut. 2nd in state is quite an accomplishment, girl or boy. Good for her.

Yeah, good for her. I for one do not subscribe to the theory that boys are balls of raging hormones, helpless and unable to control their thoughts. I think that some boys just have a hard time being beaten by a girl, and they have to find an excuse. Poor them. Go Candace.
